Birth by the Numbers, Spring 2020
Birth by the Numbers has released a new slide deck with updated US birth data through 2018. These slides are freely available for classroom use in colleges/universities, childbirth classes, or just for at-home education. In conjunction with the release of the 2016 preliminary US birth data, Birth By the Numbers has released 4 new slides updating key trends through 2016. These include total births, overall cesarean rates and cesarean rates by race/ethnicity. They show that the slight decline in the overall cesarean rate was driven by a notable decline in the non-Hispanic white rate, resulting in a growing disparity between the white and black cesarean rates in the U.S.
Each slide includes explanatory notes. They are free to use in classes and talks and we ask only that you credit them to Birth by the Numbers. Download the powerpoint slides here!

U.S. Cesarean Births Trends (1990-2013) PowerPoint Slides
Once upon a time (1990) one third of the states in the U.S. delivered less than 20% of their babies via cesarean section and no state even reached a 30% cesarean rate. Much has changed since then, starting in 2001 when Louisiana became the first state to ever reach a 30% cesarean rate. With each following year the overall U.S. cesarean birth rate continued to increase, with states reaching highs that exceeded 36%. These slides depict the map of the U.S. with its corresponding cesarean birth rates over the years and provides a clear visual of cesarean rate trends between 1990 and 2016.
